This position is only available only to employees of the Department of General Services interested in applying for a temporary promotion through a competitive process. Please note that should OMB later permit the department to fill this position on a permanent basis, the department has the discretion to either convert the promotion from a temporary to a permanent one without further competition OR to fill the position under a second competitive process.
Employee will be responsible for serving as a first-line supervisor directly supervising a shift of various levels of mechanics and lesser skilled employees who perform repairs and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of heavy duty vehicles, mobile equipment or commercial transit equipment. Duties include: scheduling and assigning work repairing vehicles; periodically inspecting work in progress or upon completion to see that repair and maintenance work are properly performed; furnishing technical advice on difficult/complex jobs; monitoring and enforcing preventive maintenance schedules; evaluating employee performance; approving employee leave requests; maintaining employee leave and attendance records; and working with County departments/agencies to resolve, repair/maintenance problems; entering data and reviewing data posted to the computerized information system. Employee will work on specific shifts to be assigned, based on a 24/7 hour operation.

Experience: Six (6) years of journey level experience in the vehicle repair trade in either heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment, commercial transit equipment, and/or fire/rescue apparatus and equipment; or any combination thereof totaling six (6) years.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland, or High School equivalency certificate.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
At Time of Employment Application: Possession of a valid current Class "C" (or equivalent) motor vehicle operator's license from applicant's state of residence.
First Day of County Employment: Possession of either a valid Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with air brakes and passenger endorsement, or a valid Instructional Permit for a Class "A" or "B" CDL with air brakes and passenger endorsement issued by applicant's state of residence. (Positions assigned to MCFRS require a valid Class "A" CDL.)
Upon Completion of Probationary Period: Possession of a valid Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with air brakes and passenger endorsement issued by employee's state of residence; and Federal Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 608 and 609) appropriate to the equipment serviced and inspected. ASE Master Certification in Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks within eighteen months of appointment to a position in this class.

1. B.S. in Automotive related area or graduation from an automotive trade school. (An equivalent amount of relevant work experience will be considered.)
2. Experience supervising staff to include evaluating employee performance and approving leave requests.
3. Experience applying the principles, practices, and concepts of automotive/ heavy equipment fleet operations and management.
4. Experience scheduling, assigning and reviewing work in progress and, upon completion, to see that repair and maintenance work are properly performed.
5. Experience using automated systems technology and software applications.
